Étudiant en journalisme et en cinéma à Los Angeles, il monte sa maison de production en collaboration avec Marshall Herskovitz. Il produit, écrit et réalise des séries (Thirtysomething) et des films TV. Certaines sont exploitées en salles. Bulletin spécial aborde le thème de l'attaque nucléaire par des terroristes, ce que reprendra Couvre-Feu, bizarrement prémonitoire. À propos d'Hier soir évoque les ambiances sado-maso de Chicago. Il obtient sa plus grande réussite avec Glory, superbe fresque sur fond de guerre de Secession. Sur le plan commercial, il décroche le jackpot avec Légende d'Automne, d'un grand romantisme sublimé par Brad Pitt. Il poursuit une carrière de scénariste et de producteur en participant à de beaux succès comme Shakespeare in Love de Sam Mendes (1998) ou Traffic de Steven Soderbergh, mais également pour ses amis scénaristes Marshall Herskovitz (Dangerous Beauty), Jessie Nelson (I am Sam), Stephen Gaghan (Abandon) et David Semel (Lone Star State of Mind).
