Étudiant à lUSC de Chicago, il se sent très tôt attiré par le cinéma. C'est à cette époque qu'il réalise son premier court métrage. Avec la complicité de son scénariste Bon Gale, il écrit 1941 pour Spielberg et ses premiers films caractérisés par un humour potache, Crazy Day et La grosse Magouille. Il décroche le jackpot avec À la recherche du Diamant vert, succès surprise avec Michael Douglas et Kathleen Turner (la suite est réalisée par Lewis Teague). Il confirme avec Retour vers le Futur au scénario particulièrement malin et à l'interprétation décontractée, notamment le farfelu Christopher Lloyd. Poulain de l'écurie Spielberg, il fait désormais partie de la jeune génération américaine, branchée BD, qui recherche avant tout l'efficacité. Les deux suites de Retour vers le futur font un tabac, Qui veut la peau de Roger Rabbit? mêlant cartoons en trois dimensions et personnages réels est un classique du genre. Forrest Gump, enfin fait un triomphe et consacre définitivement Tom Hanks. Les productions ultérieures de Zemeckis marquent un passage à vide et ne brillent pas par leur originalité (Contact).
