Il suit d'excellentes études à Cambridge, s'oriente vers la photographie. Engagé par John Grierson, il va devenir à son tour un des meilleurs représentants de l'école documentariste anglaise. Il se démarque cependant de ses collègues par un soin particulier apporté à la bande sonore. Le domaine maritime et portuaire lui inspire de belles compositions comme Cargo from Jamaica, Liner Cruising South, Song of Ceylon et Waters of Time. Wright travaille avec Harry Watt (Nightmail), Jennings (Diary for Timothy) et Paul Rotha (World without end). Par son sens du rythme, son goût du pittoresque et son humanisme, Basil Wright s'est hissé parmi les plus grands cinéastes anglais.
Basil Wright est décédé à Londres, le 14 octobre 1987.
