Venu jeune faire ses études en Angleterre, il entre à la télévision britannique à la fin des années cinquante se montrant très à l'aise pour les séries policières tournées avec des petits budgets et à grande vitesse (Room for Justice, The Plane Makers, Ghost Squad, The Wednesday Play, Sherlock Holmes). Il tourne plusieurs films d'horreur pour la Hammer typiques des productions de ces studios, évoquant Dracula (Une Messe pour Dracula avec Christopher Lee), la comtesse Bathory (Comtesse Dracula incarnée par Ingrid Pitt) et La Fille de Jack l'Éventreur, où il démontre qu'il n'est toujours facile d'être la progéniture d'un monstre. Sa meilleure réussite est Welcome to Blood City, western futuriste interprété par Jack Palance. Avec The Lonely Lady, adaptation d'une nouvelle d'Harold Robbins, il obtient en compagnie de sa sensuelle interprète Pia Zadora de nombreuses récompenses. Il dirige des interprètes de renom au cinéma (John Mills dans Ending up), et à la télévision (Christopher Lee dans Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady). Sans faire preuve d'une géniale inspiration, Sasdy fait partie des professionnels appréciés de l'écran anglais.
