Il débute comme boxeur professionnel pour se consacrer ensuite à l'écriture. Après le succès de The Body Beautiful, il devient un des scénaristes préférés de la Warner (Une Femme marquée de Goulding, The Roaring Twenties de Walsh, A Child is born, The Sea Wolf de M. Curtiz, Walk in the Sun). Il se signale par des préoccupations politiques et rejoint le parti communiste. Il passe à la réalisation avec un polar bien mené par Dick Powell, L'Heure du Crime. Il retrouve l'ambiance des vestiaires de boxe avec Sang et Or, un film sombre avec John Garfield. Pour son troisième film, Les Fous du Roi, il obtient l'oscar. Rossen aura bien du mal à confirmer ce début, d'autant qu'il doit répondre devant les juges de la commision des activités antiaméricaines. Il poursuit cependant une carrière courte mais brillante en continuant d'explorer les dérapages humains : le racisme (Une Île au Soleil), la folie (Lilith) et la malhonnêteté (L'Arnaqueur), offrant des rôles marquants à ses interprètes (Mason, Newman, J. Seberg, etc.).
Robert Rossen est décédé à New York, le 18 février 1966.
