Il suit des études de cinéma et débute comme assistant d'André Cayatte (À chacun son enfer, La Raison d'État), Yves Robert (Nous irons tous au Paradis, Courage Fuyons), Gérard Oury (La Carapate, Le Coup du Parapluie), Jean Yanne (Je te tiens, tu me tiens par la Barbichette) et Claude Pinoteau (La septième cible). Il signe son premier film, Le Crime d'Antoine en 1988. Rivière travaille essentiellement pour la télévision où il accumule les succès dans tous les genres (Arthur Rimbaud l'Homme aux semelles de vent, Le Propre de l'Homme, Les Filles à Papa, Haute Couture, Penn Sardines, Le Mystère Alexia). Il ne tourne à nouveau pour le grand écran qu'en 2006 avec Le Lièvre de Vatanen, voyage initiatique et insolite, d'après le roman d'Arto Paasilinna, où Christophe Lambert parcourt le Grand Nord avec un lièvre.
