Né Winfield Fernley Kutz, il fait ses débuts au théâtre avec la compagnie Thanhouser. Il s'intéresse au cinéma et réalise plusieurs films pour la compagnie éphémère Solax Studios. Il crée avec Clarkson P. Ryttenberg la Ryno Film Company qui devient la Ramo. Mais c'est en rejoignant David Wark Griffith et en assurant la direction de la Mutual Film Corporation qu'il prend son essor dans la profession. Il se montre particulièrement à l'aise dans le drame romantique comme Man and his Soul et Roméo et Juliette avec Francis X. Bushman et Beverly Bayne, Le Pouvoir de Décision et La petite Sténographe avec Frances Nelson, The Call of her People avec Ethel Barrymore ou Sunshine Alley avec le populaire couple du muet Mae Marsh et Robert Harron. Plus volontiers mondain, il est capable de grand mouvement comme en attestent The Bigger Man ou The Brand of Cowardice avec Lionel Barrymore et Grace Valentine. Auteur d'une trentaine de films, Noble a travaillé avec la Biograph, Universal Pictures, la Metro et les productions Goldwyn. Il quitte la réalisation à la fin du muet et ne tente qu'un essai avec le drame musical Reckless Decision, moyen métrage sur fond de jazz. Il mène une retraite paisible sous le nom de Fernley Kutz dans sa maison de Pottstown.
John W. Noble est décédé à Pottstown, le 10 septembre 1946.
