Avec la caméra de ses parents, il réalise ses premiers films en super 8. Très tôt passionné par l'électronique et les effets spéciaux, il travaille comme photograveur et finance Bad Taste avec son salaire. Alliant le gore avec l'humour le plus délirant, il poursuit avec cet esprit iconoclaste et dévastateur une série de films " cultes ", s'attaquant au film d'animation avec The Feebles et l'horreur avec Braindead où les corps sont déchiquetés avec une tondeuse à gazon. Souvent primé à Avoriaz, Jackson devient une figure de proue d'un cinéma décapant et outrancier. Il arrive à maturité avec Créatures célestes, d'après l'histoire vraie d'adolescentes lesbiennes et parricides. Le film est dédié à la mémoire de Jim Bouth, le producteur de ses premiers films. Jackson se rend aux États-Unis où il poursuit dans la veine fantastique avec des moyens de plus en plus impressionnants, obtenant un succès considérable avec la trilogie du Seigneur des Anneaux, d'après le livre cultissime de Tolkien, prolongé par la trilogie Le Hobbit. En revanche, son King Kong n'est qu'une mise à jour technologique du film de Schoedsack et Cooper, trop respectueux de l'original pour apporter un réel intérêt.
