De son vrai nom Ubb Ert Iwwerks, ce dessinateur hors-pair, d'origine néerlandaise, rencontre Walt Disney à Kansas City, en 1919. Il sera éternellement associé à Disney, même si la réalité est plus cahotique. Ensemble, ils créent la société Iwerks-Disney Studio, mais elle périclite rapidement. Engagé par des studios publicitaires du Kansas, il signe des spots animés avant de passer aux histoires populaires pour enfants. Le duo s'installe en Californie où Iwerks crée le personnage d'Alice in Cartoonland, qui verra 57 courts métrages entre 1923 et 1927. Des animateurs comme Fritz Freleng ou Walter Lantz viennent les rejoindre. Iwerks épouse Mildred Sarah Henderson en 1927, la mère de ses deux fils et sa compagne jusqu'à sa mort. Créateur rapide (on dit qu'il pouvait créer 700 dessins par jour) et farfelu (Chuck Jones disait que Iwerks était le palyndrome de Screwy qui veut dire cinglé), il laisse la gestion à Disney. Iwerks crée Oswald le lapin chanceux. Au bout d'un an, le contrat est rompu par Charles Mintz et le personnage passe sous les crayons d'anciens collaborateurs comme Walter Lantz. Le tandem rebondit en créant un nouveau personnage de souris, appellé Mortimer puis Mickey. La paternité de la souris la plus célèbre du monde est bien due à Iwerks. Un différend née entre Disney et Iwerks et ce dernier crée son propre studio. Malgré son génie, il ne pourra faire face à la concurrence de son ami. Il travaille essentiellement sur le personnage de Flip la grenouille. Il rejoint la Columbia en 1938. En 1940, il revient dans la maison Disney où il supervise les effets spéciaux, améliorant la technique d'impression optique à plusieurs objectifs qui lui permet d'associer personnages réels et animés comme dans Mélodie du Sud, Sur la piste de l'Orégon, Les 101 Dalmatiens, ou Mary Poppins. Il a créé dans sa carrière une quantité d'autres innovations techniques pour l'animation. On doit à Iwerks les effets spéciaux dans Les Oiseaux d'Alfred Hitchcock.
Ub Iwerks est décédé à Burbank (Californie), le 7 juillet 1971.
