Homme de bon goût, il se rend aux États-Unis et se lie avec Thomas Edison et Stuart Blackton. Il passe à la réalisation en 1916 et connaît un immense succès en 1921 avec Les Quatre Cavaliers de l'Apocalypse. Tourné comme un western avec les bons américains et les méchants allemands, magnifiquement photographié par George B. Seitz, cette adaptation du roman de Blasco Ibanez propulse Rudolph Valentino et Alice Terry, l'épouse d'Ingram au rang de stars. Un peu exagérément consacré parmi les très grands réalisateurs du muet, il parvient mal à confirmer ce triomphe malgré des moyens considérables. Cinéaste académique avec un net penchant pour l'insolite, élégant et rempli de bonnes intentions, Ingram signe des œuvres kitchs comme Eugénie Grandet, version bizarre du roman de Balzac, l'une des premières versions du Prisonnier de Zenda avec une autre révélation, Ramon Novarro, L'Arabe et Scaramouche (toujours avec Novarro), plusieurs fois refaits et Le Jardin d'Allah. Il se rend en Europe où il fonde les studios de la Victorine à Nice. Cependant sa carrière s'arrête après l'avènement du parlant, le gros échec de Baroud, tourné en France et son départ pour l'Égypte.
Rex Ingram est décédé à Hollywood, le 21 juin 1950.
