Fils du réalisateur Douglas Hickox et de la monteuse Anne V. Coates, il se trouve baigné très tôt, comme ses frères et soeurs James D.R et Emma, dans le monde du cinéma. Assistant et acteur, il débute comme réalisateur à l'âge de 24 ans en signant Waxwork, une série B horrifique. Il tourne d'une manière classique une série de films d'horreur à la limite du gore comme Warlock ou Hellraiser III. Piège intime tourne autour du thème du séducteur qui se révèle le parfait psychopathe au grand dam de la belle victime qu'il a séduite. Mais le réalisateur est peu inspiré et le scénario fourmille de clichés. Il tente ensuite l'adaptation de Prince Valiant d'après la BD de Harold Foster mais si le résultat est sympathique, il se rattache aux fantaisies héroïques médiévales sans grande nouveauté. Anthony Hickox retourne aux films d'action viriles de série B et Z avec Dolph Lundgren (Storm Catcher), Armand Assante (La Mission) ou Steven Seagal (Pièges en Eaux profondes). Cinéaste d'œuvrettes de grande consommation, dont certaines directement sorties en vidéo, Hickox fait plutôt bien son métier.
Anthony Hickox est décédé à Bucarest, le 9 octobre 2023.
