Acteur de théâtre, il se tourne vers la production. Exemple typique des Ealing Studios, il réalise des films populaires, brillamment interprétés (Clive Brook, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh). Avec Sherlock Holmes, adaptation sympathique de Conan Doyle, Look up and laugh d'après Priestley, Lorna Doone, drame historique et Mozart, sympathique biographie du musicien, Basil Dean fait preuve d'aisance et de savoir-faire. La réputation dont il jouit en Grande-Bretagne n'a cependant guère dépassé les frontières. Il demeure un des meilleurs artisans du cinéma anglais.
Basil Dean est décédé à Londres, le 22 avril 1978.
