Il a grandi dans l'ombre des studios et apprend les rudiments de la mise en scène auprès de cinéastes réputés. Il se lance dans la réalisation à 28 ans et très vite son habileté et son inventivité lui permettent d'enchaîner les films avec une rapidité étonnante. Il devient ainsi l'un des meilleurs réalisateurs de films fantastiques et d'horreur. Avec des budgets minimes, il parvient à imposer un esthétisme et un savoir-faire qui élève ses oeuvres au rang de classiques du genre. La Petite Boutique des Horreurs, Le Puits et la Pendule, La Chute de la Maison Usher, La Chambre des Tortures, La Malédiction d'Arkham, Le Corbeau et The Terror attestent de sa vivacité. Entouré d'acteurs fidèles comme Vincent Price, Jack Nicholson, Peter Lorre ou Peter Fonda, producteur de ses propres films, il permet également à des jeunes réalisateurs de faire leur preuve comme Francis Ford Coppola, Monte Helman, Brian De Palma et Dennis Hopper. Il se montre aussi à l'aise dans le film de gangsters (Mitraillette Kelly, Bloody Mamma, L'Affaire Al Capone) que dans l'évocation des exploits aériens de Von Richtofen dans Le Baron Rouge. Après 1971, il se consacre à la production. Il reçoit une standing ovation à Cannes en 2023 pour sa dernière apparition publique à 97 ans.
Roger Corman est décédé à Los Angeles, le 9 mai 2024.
