Critique de cinéma dès l'âge de 17 ans, il est engagé en 1955 à la télévision. Il y réalise un bon nombre de documentaires dont The Great Director, consacré à David W. Griffith. Passé à la réalisation de cinéma en 1965, il signe des œuvres d'une grande puissance dont certaines sont considérées comme des classiques (Le Point de Non-retour, violent thriller avec Lee Marvin, Duel dans le Pacifique, sur l'absurdité de la guerre, Délivrance, opus écologique aux scènes très spectaculaires, Zardoz, fable futuriste, Excalibur, flamboyante transposition des "Chevaliers de la Table Ronde", La Forêt d'émeraude, sur les indiens d'Amazonie). Le réalisme des uns (l'autobiographique Hope and Glory) contraste avec le surréalisme des autres (Léo the Last, provocation érotique). John Boorman est également producteur notamment de Dream One d'Arnaud Sélignac. Cinéaste vigoureux, il laisse toujours des images fortes comme Rangoon qui prend parti pour Aung San Sun Kyi contre la dictature militaire en Birmanie, Le Général où un simple truand devient une figure mytique de la résistance en Irlande, ou The Taylor of Panama d'après John Le Carré.
