Il suit des études de journaliste, puis entre à l'Université du Missouri, dont il ressort ingénieur. Il participe à la deuxième guerre mondiale comme pilote. Démobilisé, il s'installe à Los Angeles où il écrit quelques scénarios pour le cinéma et la radio. Il collabore également à plusieurs revues. Après quelques petits films commerciaux, il réalise son premier film personnel en 1955. Le second est une intéressante biographie de James Dean, symbole d'une Amérique rebelle auquel il consacrera d'autres films. De 1958 à 1964, il s'oriente vers la télévision et fonde sa propre maison de production (La Lion's Gate Films) en 1968. Grâce à M.A.S.H., une farce militaire pendant la guerre de Corée et avec l'appui du scénariste corrosif Rod Lardner Jr, il obtient deux ans plus tard la palme d'or à Cannes. Depuis, il s'ingénie à passer au papier de verre les divers aspects de l'Amérique. Détournant tous les genres, ses films vont du western avec John McCabe, Buffalo Bill et les Indiens, le polar avec Le Privé et The Player, le film musical avec Nashville, l'adaptation théâtrale avec Streamers, Secret Honor. Ses dernières réalisations sont des patchworks d'instants de vie croqués avec férocité et dynamisme comme en attestent Kansas City, Cookie's Fortune, The Last Show et surtout Short Cuts. Avec son esprit anticonformiste, il construit une œuvre marginale qui lui assure cependant une grande notoriété, au point qu'il parvient à réunir un panel de stars, prêtes à sacrifier leur cachet pour tourner avec lui.
Robert Altman est décédé à New York, le 22 novembre 2006.
