	Hollywood n’aurait jamais été Hollywood sans Mary Pickford, et sa personnalité si particulière. D’abord comédienne (236 films en 27 ans de carrière), elle cofonde en 1919 les studios United Artists, et devient l’actrice la mieux payée en ces débuts du cinéma. Comment la petite Gladys Smith, enfant pauvre de Toronto, est-elle devenue l’une des pionnières du cinéma muet ? Mary Pickford naît Gladys Smith à Toronto, le 8 avril 1892. Son père périt dans un accident de travail laissant sa femme Charlotte sans ressources avec trois enfants. Sur scène depuis l’enfance, Mary débute à l’écran aux États-Unis en 1909, à la compagnie Biograph. Elle sculpte ce personnage de petite fille ingénue aux boucles blondes et au sourire désarmant. Sa popularité croît rapidement et, à la fin de cette année, elle est déjà une star. Sa mère veille avec attention à sa carrière et son image. Sous la direction de David Wark Griffith, elle tourne de nombreux films comme The little teacher, Ramona, An Arcadian maid et tant d’autres. En 1911, elle signe successivement avec les firmes IMP et Majestic, qui lui offrent à chaque fois une augmentation de salaire. On la voit alors dans, notamment, Their first misunderstanding, The courting of Mary ou Le petit chaperon rouge. En 1912, elle est de retour à la Biograph où Griffith la dirige à nouveau dans plusieurs films, parmi lesquels Le Mouchard avec Harry Carey ou encore Le Chapeau de New York. La petite fiancée de l'Amérique En 1913, Mary Pickford signe avec Adolph Zukor. Bientôt surnommée La petite fiancée de l’Amérique, son salaire atteint en quelques années des sommes astronomiques. Avec ses rôles d’éternelle petite fille bouclée, Mary Pickford se doit d’être intègre et vertueuse. C’est le cas dans Caprice, Tess au pays des tempêtes, Cendrillon, La petite Peppina, Pauvre petite fille riche, Petite princesse, Petit démon, Le Roman de Marie ou Captain Kidd, Jr. Elle tourne ensuite trois films pour la First National en, 1919, Papa longues jambes, Dans les bas-fonds et Heart O’the Hills, avant de travailler désormais pour la United Artists, la maison de production dont elle est en 1919 la co-fondatrice avec Charles Chaplin, David Wark Griffith et Douglas Fairbanks Sr, son époux de 1920 à 1935. Au cours des années vingt, Mary Pickford reste une des étoiles les plus importantes d’Hollywood et est l’interprète de, notamment, Pollyanna, Le petit lord Fauntleroy, un remake de Tess au pays des tempêtes, Rosita, La petite Annie Rooney, Les moineaux et La petite vendeuse. Au cours d’un voyage en Union Soviétique. en 1927, elle apparaît brièvement dans Le baiser de Mary Pickford de Serguei Komarov, preuve de sa popularité universelle. Bien que, durant sa carrière, elle ait tenu toutes sortes de rôles, c’est dans celui de petite fille ou d’adolescente que le public la préfère. Passage au parlant À l’arrivée du sonore, Mary Pickford décide d’adopter à l’écran une image plus mûre et plus sophistiquée. En 1928, elle coupe ses longues boucles blondes et l’événement fait la une des journaux. Mais ses fans sont quelque peu décontenancés. Ayant adulé le personnage de la petite Mary, ils sont réticents à voir celle-ci grandir. Elle réussit toutefois à remporter l’Oscar pour Coquette, son premier film parlant, qui est une grande réussite au box-office. On la voit ensuite aux côtés de Douglas Fairbanks dans La mégère apprivoisée, qui, tout en remportant un joli succès, a cependant moins d’impact que l’on pouvait s’imaginer. Le parcours d’actrice de Mary Pickford s’achève avec Kiki de Sam Taylor et Secrets de Frank Borzage, deux échecs commerciaux. Comprenant que les goûts des spectateurs ont évolué et qu’elle n’arrivera plus à retrouver les sommets qu’elle avait atteints à l’époque du muet, elle décide alors de se retirer, à la tête d’une considérable fortune. Elle envisage un temps de se présenter comme candidate aux élections sénatoriales. On la retrouve encore à quelques reprises au générique de plusieurs films en qualité de productrice. Elle vit pendant quarante ans en recluse dans un palais doré. Elle s’éteint à Santa Monica le 29 mai 1979, des suites d’une hémorragie cérébrale.
